Bipartisan Coalition Introduces PREDICT Act to Save Wastewater Monitoring as Funding Expires

Wastewater Action Alliance thanks Senators Tim Scott (R-SC), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Ted Budd (R-NC),
Angus King (I-ME), Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH) for their bipartisan leadership to
protect and strengthen America’s wastewater monitoring network – a proven early warning system that has become communities’ first line of defense against infectious disease outbreaks.

We must act now: as federal funding allocated in 2025 begins to run out this year, programs nationwide face shutdown or dramatic scale-back, eliminating coverage across the country and crippling our capacity to detect new and emerging pathogens before they spread. We cannot afford to lose access to this vital early
warning system that protects American families and communities by giving them critical time to prepare
and respond to emerging health threats.

“Wastewater monitoring has proven to be an invaluable early warning system, detecting measles, RSV,
influenza, and other infectious diseases days or even weeks before people show up sick at hospitals – giving
individuals and communities the power to see health threats coming and prepare for them before they arrive at our doorsteps,” said Kate Hull, Executive Director of the Wastewater Action Alliance. “This bipartisan legislation recognizes the vital role of wastewater monitoring in protecting American families from infectious disease.”
